Case Background

This case involved allegations that MiTAC Digital Corporation, the manufacturer of Magellan RoadMate navigation devices, misrepresented its products by advertising “free lifetime map updates” while later charging consumers for those updates. Plaintiffs claimed this practice violated consumer-protection laws by misleading purchasers into believing they would receive complimentary updates for the life of their devices. MiTAC denied the allegations but agreed to a settlement to resolve the claims and provide eligible consumers an opportunity for reimbursement or compensation.

Our Goal

CPT Group was selected to oversee the settlement administration with the objective of providing efficient, transparent, and far-reaching notice to affected consumers nationwide. The goal was to maximize awareness of the settlement and ensure an equitable and accessible claims process through comprehensive digital and traditional communication channels.

The CPT Group Solution

CPT Group executed a robust notice and claims administration program designed to inform and engage a broad consumer audience. Direct notice was delivered via email and mail, reaching known purchasers through verified databases. To supplement these direct efforts, CPT designed and deployed a multi-media digital campaign that leveraged national advertising platforms, online display and social media, and a nationwide press release supported by print publication placements.

To streamline accessibility, CPT developed a dedicated settlement website with full case information, FAQs, and online claim submission capability. A toll-free support hotline provided live assistance for inquiries, ensuring inclusivity for class members preferring phone support.

Results

CPT Group’s comprehensive outreach program achieved a verified 82% reach among the targeted class audience, exceeding industry benchmarks for notice adequacy and effectiveness. The claims process was executed through both digital and hard-copy claim forms, offering flexible participation options. Valid claimants received timely payments via paper check, completing the distribution phase with accuracy and compliance.

CPT’s administration of the Livingston v. MiTAC Digital Corporation settlement demonstrated its ability to integrate advanced digital communication strategies with traditional notice methods—ensuring due process, transparency, and trust in the administration process.
